Just What The Doctor Ordered

The Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia (EFGA) continues to look out for the well being of its' patients on the issue of medication switching. This is extremely important as often times a generic version of an epilepsy drug may not have the same efficacy in controlling seizures as a brand drug.

Two recent developments on this front are the publication of a wallet card for patients to carry containing important information outlining questions the patient needs to ask their doctor or pharmacist about any change in their medication. This patient education card is available free of charge by contacting Lloyd Brown at lloyd@epilepsyga.org. Please include your home address and the card will be sent to you immediately. The cards are also available at neurologists' offices throughout the state.

The second major development in this area is the passage by the Georgia legislature of House bill 194, which will require Georgia pharmacies to indicate on the medication bottle if there has been a brand to generic switch. This will make awareness of any such switch much more visible to the consumer. We want to thank Senator Don Thomas, MD of Dalton and Rep. Fran Millar of Dunwoody for guiding this legislation into passage.
