Advocacy on Issues Affecting People with Epilepsy

Advocacy main | Just What The Doctor Ordered | EFGA Visits the National Capitol for Kids Speak Up Conference

The Epilepsy Foundation is the leading advocate to address the problems faced by persons with epilepsy. Our targeted areas for advocacy are:

Securing Greater Funding for a Cure, Better Treatment and Programs

  • Increase the amount of National Institutes of Health research funding dedicated to epilepsy
  • Increase funding for Epilepsy Programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
  • Increase funding for Project Access Epilepsy Program at the Health Resources and Services Center (HRSA)
  • Increase funding for programs that serve epilepsy patients at the state level

Improve Access to Medical Care and Treatment

  • Medication switching- Although some people can switch their medications from brand to generic, others cannot. EFGA is working to ensure that you are able to receive the medication your physician feels is best for you
  • Implementation of Health Care Reform Law- We strongly support comprehensive health care reform to improve access to care, do away with pre-existing clauses in insurance coverage and provide a quicker route towards specialty care if needed

Raising Awareness and Stopping Discrimination against People with Epilepsy

  • Strengthening the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • Serving as an Advocate for Students with Epilepsy in Development of IEP's and 504 plans
  • Provision of attorneys and legal advocates through the Jeanne A. Carpenter Legal Defense Fund
  • Providing employer education to lessen discrimination and stigma in the workplace

Just What The Doctor Ordered

The Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia (EFGA) continues to look out for the well being of its' patients on the issue of medication switching. This is extremely important as often times a generic version of an epilepsy drug may not have the same efficacy in controlling seizures as a brand drug. More >>>
