Studio E: Creating a Different View of Epilepsy

Throughout history, people with epilepsy have been noted as being creative, artistic and great writers. There is a school of thought that the sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain during a seizure actually stimulate these talents.

During the months of October and November, the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia (EFGA) was given the opportunity to provide a new and unique program to the Georgia Epilepsy Community. Studio E: The Epilepsy Art Therapy Program, funded by Lundbeck, Inc., allowed EFGA to bring art therapy to nine adults living with epilepsy from all over the state.

In four 3-hour sessions, the program's participants created works of art that expressed their experiences with epilepsy through a variety of art mediums. The program served as not only a creative outlet for expressing experiences with epilepsy, but also as an opportunity for meeting with and offering support to others living with epilepsy. The program's nine participants created over 30 pieces of art throughout the course of the program, and included a diverse group of adults of different ages, genders, and races. Each participant's unique personalities shined through their artwork, but all were unified by their shared experience with epilepsy. Select pieces of artwork from the program will be displayed at the American Epilepsy Society's annual meeting in Baltimore, MD in December.
