Camps and Camping Events - Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia
CAMP BIG HEART 2009
The Georgia Affiliate recently completed its 2009 Epilepsy Summer Camp Program at Camp Big Heart in Winder, Georgia. The program consists of two week-long sessions for persons with epilepsy and other developmental disabilities. Camp Big Heart is sponsored by a partnership between the Civitan Clubs of Georgia and Camp Twin Lakes.
Campers could choose between a wide variety of activities, including arts and crafts, fishing, a talent show, music and dance, swimming and nature walks. These experiences were enhanced by the newly upgraded facilities at the Will-A-Way camp grounds.
In addition to the usual camp activities, the week plays an important role in creating awareness that you are not alone when you have epilepsy. This helps to reduce stress, build self esteem and create lasting friendships between campers.
We want to thank the army of volunteers who make the camp possible: the dedicated counselors, medical staff, activity coordinators and entertainment providers who all donate their time. Many of these volunteers have epilepsy themselves or a family member with epilepsy, so they have a special understanding of its’ impact. All staff received training in seizure recognition/first aid.
If you would like to placed on the mailing list for information on the 2010 camp sessions, please e-mail lloyd@epilepsyga.org with your street mailing address. An information packet on the camps will be sent out in January 2010.
We would like to thank the following clubs, organizations and businesses that made it possible for 30 participants to attend on camp scholarships. This ensured that no one was turned away from camp due to financial hardship.
