Education ProgramsEpilepsy can strike a person at any age, so the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia tailors its educational offerings to meet the needs of all age levels. Programs can be designed for both small groups as well as system-wide meetings.
The following is a brief description of these programs. To schedule a presentation, please contact Lloyd Brown at (800) 527-7105 or lloydrbrown@mindspring.com
Get an Early/Head Start
On Being Seizure Smart
One in every fifty children under the age of 18 has a seizure
disorder, often resulting from prenatal disturbance of brain development. Early
diagnosis and treatment is essential to getting proper treatment and minimizing
seizure frequency. The Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia provides in-services for
childcare centers, Head Start programs and other early childhood education
facilities.
Seizure Smart
Schools
Epilepsy can be a major educational impairment if
undiagnosed, as the brain's ability to process and retain and process
information is interrupted. In-service programs are provided to teachers, staff,
school transportation officials and other students on the various types of
seizures, proper first aid procedures and educational impact
Workplace Education
There is a high level of unemployment for people with
epilepsy because of employer ignorance and fear about the condition. The
Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia can go into the workplace and educate co-workers,
supervisors, occupational health personnel and human resource staff and dispel
many myths surrounding seizures. We can also inform the workers of their rights
afforded them under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Seizures in Later
Life
Seizures are the third leading neurological
impairment in the elderly after Alzheimer's disease and stroke. These seizures
are often misinterpreted as simply "part of getting older." The Seizures in
Later Life Program is offered at area assisted living facilities, senior centers
and AARP meetings. We would like to thank UCB, Inc. for
their underwriting of this program.
Epilepsy Symposium
The affiliate annually hosts an Epilepsy Symposium in
early November as a part of its Epilepsy Month activities. The 2008 Symposium
will be held November 1 at the Loudermilk Center in downtown Atlanta. Detailed
information will appear on our Events page as November draws closer.
Seizure Seminars
The Georgia Affiliate will be sponsoring a number of educational Seizure Seminars throughout the year. Please check the calendar page for a list of upcoming programs.
